About

Thank you for visiting the online exhibition of Here Comes the Sun: How Florida Became the Sunshine State in the 1960s.  This website and the physical exhibit were created, curated, designed and executed by 29 Florida State University (FSU) students over a four-month period.

An Exhibition Created for Students, By Students!

The Here Comes the Sun exhibition was the responsibility of FSU students earning certificates in Museum Studies. To build their experience in the field, they were tasked with execution of the entire exhibition process – from curatorial and design roles to online exhibitions and educational endeavors.

Planning and facilitating the Here Comes the Sun exhibit was part of the curriculum for the Spring Museum Object course which explores the philosophy and practices of acquiring, processing, preserving, displaying and interpreting museum objects.

But why the 60s?

The project came with a broad subject the students were asked to follow – the State of Florida. Using objects and items from Special Collections, we were then asked to create a memorable exhibition that would speak to the exhibition’s audience – in this case, FSU students studying for their final exams.

Exams are tough. Final exams are even tougher. We settled on the 1960s as it was an exciting and interesting time in Florida history. Lively, flirty and fun – the 60s meant the Beatles, hippies, the Last Frontier, civil unrest and (sometimes) justice. We knew this exhibit would be fun and educational escape for our collegiate comrades while studying in our main library.

Is There More?

The exhibit was launched on April 20, 2012 and is currently housed at the Strozier Library on the main campus of FSU and will remain on view into the summer. You are welcome to visit the free exhibition but non-FSU students will need to check in with the Front Desk with valid ID to obtain a visitor's pass. The exhibition is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 10:00am to 6:00pm.

A special thanks to Dr. Teri Abstein, Gina Woodward and Katie McCormick.

Thank you to our teams and all of their hard work putting this exhibit together!
